Ramadan initiative aims to rescue five million children from malnutrition worldwide
DUBAI – An anonymous philanthropist has contributed Dh35 million in support of the Edge of Life campaign, which seeks to rescue five million children from hunger worldwide.
Launched during Ramadan by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the initiative aims to raise a minimum of Dh1 billion to fund sustainable programmes that address childhood malnutrition.
The campaign reinforces a long-standing humanitarian vision championed by His Highness, who regards the protection of human life—particularly that of children—as a fundamental development priority. The focus is not limited to emergencies or temporary crises but stems from a moral and humanitarian commitment to safeguarding vulnerable lives.
Edge of Life
Operating under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), the Edge of Life campaign has received wide participation from individuals, institutions, and businesses. This collective support highlights the UAE community’s strong culture of generosity and commitment to humanitarian efforts.
The initiative is organised in partnership with UNICEF, Save the Children, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Action Against Hunger, ensuring professional oversight and effective delivery of aid.
Critical measurement
The number 11.5 is central to the campaign’s work, representing the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) for children aged six months to five years. According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a MUAC measurement below 11.5 cm is one of the indicators of acute malnutrition, used for early detection and intervention.
